The annotations are an absolute pleasure to read and some of the most inspiring comments I have read in some time.
So many books, so little time. But, I can enjoy them, vicariously through you all
Joy, joy!!!!

yes, I agree Laurel. By sharing annotations and reviews, we can enrich one another and magnify our reading power.

Hi guys,

I’m just playing around this morning before I plough into my notes for the comps (I’m not very good at sitting at a computer with my books and notes all day every day for a month).

Brian sent me two more books with annotations that I will be adding to our reading list: I’ll just mention the title here, but I will add the annotations to the google doc:

Atheist Delusions: The Christian Revolution and Its Fashionable Enemies, David Bentley Hart, Yale, 2009 (22 reviews on Amazon).

Justification: God's Plan and Paul's Vision, N.T. Wright, InterVarsity, 2009 (19 reviews).

Today is a gold mine for books and reviews on jesuscreed.org. There are posts discussing a recently published book by CS Lewis’ wife, Joy, Out of My Bone: The Letters and Autobiography of Joy Davidman
(ed Don W. King) which include her letters about her journey from secular Judaism to atheism to Communism and finally to her Christian faith. The letters also talk about her battle with the cancer that took her life and that led to some of Lewis' own most potent writing.

McKnight also discusses another interesting looking book by James Bryan Smith: The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love With the God Jesus Knows. The basic message is that God is trustworthy: "The God Jesus reveals would never do anything to harm us. He has no malice or evil intentions. He is completely good. ... I can trust God" (56).

By-the-way, neither of the books above have reviews posted on Amazon yet, so if any of you frustrated writers get a chance to read them, post your review on amazon and then send it to us.

And then a discussion of several different commentaries (F.F. Bruce, Wanamaker, Malherbe, Ben Witherington) on 1-2 Thessalonians.

And finally, a post discussing Dante Alighieri's, The Divine Comedy, Virgil’s The Aeneid, Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey; which McKnight calls “Wonderful books, breathtaking grasps of the relationship of the human and the divine, bold and brazen in their attempts to wrap their minds around life as they experienced it.”

Oh, and John… I was wondering if you would send me the publishing information and title of the book by Charles Simpson that you were discussing? The one with ants in the title? Also a paragraph or two telling what the focus of the book is about.

One last comment. If you are a heavy reader, and if you aspire to write a book someday (or several) get in the habit of taking notes as you read, and develop a system of organizing and keeping your book publishing information, reviews and notes (with page numbers). If you ever need to quote or cite from something you have read, you will be grateful. I recommend Nota Bene, but there is also Endnote, RefWorks and other kinds of software. Just do a google search for the previously mentioned three PBMs (Personal Bibliographic Management tools).

Joseph, I'll find the Simpson book. Steve H. also read it. Regarding the bibliography, I would enjoy knowing who did the annotation...

its a long list John, so I will have to break this into several comments-- I'll go in alphabetical order: Emmet, Grant and Long first:

Robert Grant
Finke, Roger, The Churching of America, 1776-2005; Winners and Losers in Our Religious Economy. New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 2005.

Tickle, Phyllis. The Great Emergence. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 2008.

Lencioni, Patrick. Death by Meeting: A Leadership Fable. About Solving the Most Painful Problem in Business. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Books, 2004.
------. The Three Signs of a Miserable Job: A Fable for Managers (and Their Employees). San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Books, 2007.

Noll, Mark A. The New Shape of World Christianity: How American Experience Reflects Global Faith. Downers Grove, IL: Intervarsity, 2009.

Would any of the three of you care to comment on these books and why you suggested them?

Thanks Joseph. Sorry I didn't submit my list. My blogging and reading has been interrupted by life... I'm doing blue collar work, psinting -- enjoying seeing visual accomplishment daily, being exhausted, and making about the same amount that I gross each month as a teacher...

Hi Jeanne, you must be one of John Meadow's multiple online personalities, along with Sara, right?

John, you forgot to log-out and log back in in again ...

John M. said...

Oops... Wonder why my surrogate personalities are always female? Sam, where are you...?

Yes, I confess, I'm Jeanne. She is my cousin's wife. They were spending the weekend with us, and I borrowed her laptop to make my comment...

hi John: probably because you have 3 daughters, a wife and until recently two granmas living with you ... not to worry.

Here is an on-line book review by Ed Chinn of Supper of the Lamb, by Robert Farrar Capon. I think it would be fair to say that Ed likes the book – a lot.
